Senator Biden stayed on message and may have been at his very best, but all eyes were on Governor Palin. She refused to answer many questions and, instead, stuck to her own script. That was a good play on her part. Most important, she did not stumble and played up her outsider status.
Governor Palin had become a national punchline. She took these hits, yet came into the field house swinging. She was confident and homespun. I am not sure she attracted any new voters to the McCain campaign, but she did no harm. And, doing no harm was a win for her in this debate.
Governor Palin was light on substance, where Senator Biden was heavy. Governor Palin’s limited exposure to the American people, made this debate about her. Senator Biden delivered the performance of his life, but it will not matter as the pundits spin this. Governor Palin did not out-debate Biden, but she did not fail. In this game, she gets the biggest prize of the night and that is a dimming of the spotlight on her. This is good for team McCain.
